Opening the Accused Histogram Data Set in Excel (or another program) reveals its three columns:
- The "Month of Accusation" and the "Month of Execution" columns from the Accused Witches Data Set.
- A "Bin" column provides a series of numbers expressing the approximate range of months of the witchcraft episode; January 1692 = 1 and January 1693 = 13. Unknown cases are designated -1.
To make a histogram showing the distribution of accusations during 1692 in Excel, go to the Tools Menu and select "Data Analysis" and then "Histogram. For "Input Range," drag the mouse to select all the data cells of the "Month of Accusation" column. Perform the same procedure for "Bin Range," selecting the data cells in the "Bin" column. In the "Histogram" window, choose "New Worksheet Ply," "Chart Output," and "Label." A histogram of the "Month of Accusation" will appear on a new worksheet along with a chart of the bin numbers and "Frequency" of accusations. It can be resized and relabeled using the "Chart Options" in the Chart Menu.
